“Tamika!” I felt a feeling of dread come over me as I recognized the familiar voice calling out my name. I used to hear that voice every day… it was Malik, my ex-boyfriend. Every time I heard his voice I got shivers, but not in a good way. I looked up to see him smiling as he walked towards me, looking very different from the man I used to know, the man who would beat me every day and call me names constantly. I wasn’t fooled for a damn second.

“Tamika! What’s happening baby?”

I gave him a cold look.

“First off, I’m not your baby. Second, what are you doing here? You know I don’t want anything to do with you.”

“What am I doing here? Same thing you’re doing, getting a cup of coffee. What, do you own Starbucks now?”

“You know I’m here every morning, so let’s be real. What do you want now?”

He laughed arrogantly, and took a seat next to me. I shuddered as he did, wondering why the hell I stayed with him so long in the first place. Now that I had broken it off with him I saw him for what he truly was, a lowlife.

“I’m just here for some coffee, calm down.”

“Then why aren’t you ordering coffee instead of sitting down next to me?”

A stupid expression flashed across his face for a moment, before it was replaced by his familiar cocky grin.

“Alright then, I’ll be real with you. I want you back, is that so wrong?”

“And what makes you think I want to fuck with your broke ass anymore?”

I gave him a dirty look as I said it, hoping that Malik would get the hint and leave me alone. Even though we lived in a big city, we had a lot of the same friends and no matter how hard I tried to avoid him, we always seemed to end up at the same club or party. Back in the day when we first started dating I had been impressed by his “bad boy” image, and being a good girl he easily took advantage of me.

For a moment as I looked at his pleading expression I felt a little guilty for talking to him like that, but then I thought back on how he used to beat me and with a flash of anger I continued talking.

“As a matter of fact, I don’t even want to be in the same building as you.”

I grabbed my coffee and stood up, ready to walk out. Like lightening his expression changed, and he stood up as well.

“Listen to me, you know you got shit twisted earlier, we just had a disagreement. Everyone argues from time to time but that doesn’t mean you should give up on us.”

If I wasn’t so scared, I would have laughed. Hearing him describe the way he beat me as “arguing” was pathetic.

“Goodbye.”

With that I started towards the door, only to feel his hand grab my wrist tightly. He pulled
